Zhang named Duke PNC Achievers Student-Athlete of the Week
DURHAM – Junior men’s tennis Duke Andrew Zhang was selected by Duke’s PNC Achievers Student-Athlete of the Week after winning the ITA Carolina Regional Championship singles title.
Zhang defeated Taha Baadi of Wake Forest in the singles tournament final to win the Blue Devils first individual title since 2011. He became the fifth player in program history to win the singles title, and the first since the volunteer assistant coach. Chris Mengel did so in 2011. Henrique cunha (2010), Jonathan stokke (2005) and Ludovic Walter (2003 and 2004) also won regional singles titles during their time as Blue Devil.
In five days, Zhang won seven games, including one against 16th Connor Thompson of South Carolina. During that time, he played a total of 16 sets and lost just two. After beating Thompson in Monday’s semifinals, Zhang faced seventh-seeded Baadi in the title game. Baadi outlived Zhang in the opening set 7-5, but the Bloomfield Hills, Mich. Native rallied to record a 6-1 back-to-back victory in the final two frames to secure the victory.
Zhang will then travel to San Diego, Calif., Thursday through Sunday for the ITA Fall National Championships.
PNC Achievers is a student awards platform active in nearly 20 schools and universities in the PNC Bank service area.
