Woman loses $40,000 to scammer impersonating famous actor on Instagram

LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) – The Lincoln Police Department says a woman lost $40,000 because a scammer she thought was a famous actor messaged her on Instagram.

On Monday, LPD said officers were contacted about a fraud case in which a 40-year-old woman said she was contacted by a man via Instagram who said he was actor Henry. Cavill.

According to police, the woman explained that she and the man had been texting each other for some time and he told her he had sent a briefcase containing $10 million and diamonds.

LPD said the scammer told the woman that the briefcase was not being delivered because she was being held by customs and that she would have to give him her bank details to purchase bitcoins to send to the customs officer.

Investigators said the woman lost $40,000 to the scammer.

LPD says to be cautious and suspicious of anyone asking for your banking information. Investigators suggest contacting your bank to see if a request is legitimate.

How to spot a scam

The Better Business Bureau has several ways to protect your personal information and money from scammers pretending to be your friend on social media.

  • Beware of online messages. Sometimes friends share things without checking them first. Online accounts can be compromised. Take a closer look before you share, apply or donate.
  • Press for more details. Ask strategic questions without giving out any personal information to confirm that you are actually talking to someone you know. If your “friend” can’t give you direct answers, leave the conversation, block them, then change your account settings and password.
  • Check your friends list. If you received a friend request from someone you think is already a friend, check your friends list to see if it could be a fake duplicate account.
  • Report any suspicious activity. Report scammers and impersonations to help protect true friends and family from being scammed. Reduce the risk of your profile being impersonated by tightening privacy settings and hiding your friends list.
